Kerry Krogstad is known for her bold, fragmented, mixed-media portraits of strong feminine archetypes. She uses different types of paints and cut up magazines to create dreamlike and surreal works. Kerry grew up in Southern California and studied at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. She graduated at the height of the economic crash in 2008, and with little opportunity to put her degree to use she began modeling and acting.
An opportunity to build her portfolio took her to Asia for months on an agency contract. While working overseas, she experienced a bizarre fashion industry where models were treated like livestock, lied to and overworked. The one solace she had was her pen and sketchbook. To unwind after 12-hour casting days she would stay home and draw; a new form of therapy was discovered.
She coincidentally often found herself in far away locales in the coming years, and with extra time on those journeys, she made art. From house-sitting in Hawaii, to joining her filmmaker boyfriend on location in places like Marfa, Texas and Tokyo, Japan. These somewhat isolating experiences gave her the opportunity to pour herself into exploring different cities and making art, each place having a unique effect on the work created. In between traveling she took up figure drawing and various art classes to refine her skill.
In Spring of 2017, Kerry premiered her art at the Angel Orensanz Center in New York City during Fashion Week, where she also walked the runway in a dress made of condoms designed by Julia Husch to benefit the AIDS Foundation. She consistently exhibits her work with Art Hearts Fashion in LA, the Venice Art Crawl, and in local LA stores like New Profanity. Kerry had her first solo show at New Profanity in April, 2018. She is currently at work on a brand new series.
